Bad Apples

German director Jonatan Etzler holds a mirror up to the contemporary British school system, hilariously cutting through issues around care and discipline with some surprising and shocking twists. Bad Apples seamlessly blends satire, suspense and social commentary to ask how far any school would go to maintain an outstanding score from Ofsted.

And Still I Rise
And Still I Rise showcases powerful new performances for Black History Month, across dance, poetry, spoken word, rap and music. Ten Midlands-based artists from Black, African and Caribbean backgrounds have created work that is brave, honest and highly evocative. Each brings their own unique voice to their performance, often turning the personal into the political. Featuring: Ryan Dre Sinclair (@ryan_dre_sinclair) – spoken word poet, theatre-maker and founder of Empower Poetry, blending humour with depth. Rikkai Scott (@kai_4sure) – performer, choreographer and Artistic Director of Rhythmflow Dance, combining hip hop, contemporary and tap. NEONE (@neone_wonderer) – musical alchemist, mixing genres to create unique, signature sounds through an eclectic Jazz-grime fusion inspired by Neo-soul. Maia Sudha (@maiasudhamusic) – drawing influence from soul, pop and R&B, creating songs that combine honest lyricism and vocal expression. Jonathan Akinsete (@jono.a_) – passionate about rap, spoken word and singing, using music to connect, inspire and move people. I Put the T in Poetry (@i.put.the.t.in.poetry) – transforms lived experience into performances that invite healing, connection and social change. Holly Francis (@.hollybolly.) – a choreographer whose practice unpacks identity and cultural heritage, investigating layered human experiences in historical and contemporary contexts. Drippo Joel (@drippo_joel) – the UK's answer to a sound you thought you'd lost – the warmth and swagger of noughties R&B, rebuilt for right now. Alexis Florentina (@exisflor) – a Black and Filipino poet, playwright and fiction writer, and member of the Nottingham Black Creatives Network. Anthony Sempebwa (@anto._13s) – a high-level dance artist specialising in hip-hop, while drawing from house, krump and Afro dance styles. Expect an evening of frank storytelling, movement, rhythm and fresh perspectives – celebrating the creativity of regional Black artists while exploring prejudice, power and everyday truths in an unmissable production. And Still I Rise is commissioned by 2Funky Arts and supported using public funding by Arts Council England. Project partners are Punch, Baby People and Radio2Funky.

Dervish Productions: Punk Days
Part autobiography, part musical journey and part political coming of age, PUNK DAYS is the true story of a mixed race, working-class kid growing up in 70’s London, plagued by racism, who finds hope and liberation in the power of Punk and the fight against fascism. “It was the summer of ’77 and I was a rebellious 16 year old: the Labour government was on the rocks, the Nazi National Front was on the rise, and the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations were rudely undermined when the Sex Pistols’ ‘God Save the Queen’ went to the top of the charts, and was promptly banned by the BBC. The Pistols’ ‘Anarchy in the UK’ exploded like a depth charge, blowing accepted musical rules out of the water. The Clash’s debut single ‘White Riot’ pointed us to a different future. But what exactly was a White Riot? Wasn’t that what the Enoch Powell brigade and National Front thugs would like to do to us given half a chance?”“I look around me at the sea of faces and something clicks. Maybe I don’t have to be so scared. Maybe we all can fight the fascists, drive them back or even overcome them? That London might be a different place, where I can grow up with ease…With ease". Pulp: What Do You Do For An Encore? is a celebration of one of Britain's most unusual bands, captured during their triumphant 2025 tour. Directed by longtime collaborator Garth Jennings and narrated by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, the film weaves together footage from their ingenious live show with four decades of never-before-seen archival material, charting the band’s circuitous journey from Sheffield outsiders to unlikely cultural icons. The screening will be followed by a recorded Q&A with Jarvis Cocker and director Garth Jennings.

Colour Box: The Red Turtle
Oscar-winner Michaël Dudok de Wit’s exquisite wordless animation tells the story of a man marooned on a desert island populated by turtles and crabs, but devoid of any other human life. He tries desperately to escape until one day he meets a strange, giant red turtle and begins a friendship that will change his life. The drop-in workshop begins at 10am in the Performance Studio and the relaxed/subtitled film screening begins at 11am in the Cinema. Tickets are also available to see the film without the workshop.

Rita, Sue & Bob Too
Rita, Sue & Bob Too is a controversial comic drama about two adolescent school girls who start seeing a married man with no initial concern for the consequences. Directed by Alan Clarke and written by playwright Andrea Dunbar, the film has 1980s Britain running through it, and boasted the strapline ‘Thatcher’s Britain with her knickers down’. For some it was uncomfortable and for others joyful, but either way, it’s undoubtedly a striking piece of writing and filmmaking. As part of the BFI’s nationwide Rip It Up season, Birmingham actress and MAC cinema devotee Enva Lewis (How To Have Sex, Your Fault: London) has put together a season of films about the defiance, joy and vulnerability of growing up as a city kid in Britain. Enva Lewis on why she chose Rita, Sue & Bob Too - ‘My mom has always had a fantastic habit of recalling incredible films she watched when she was younger and letting me watch them alone. Then rewatching with me and realising they were ridiculously inappropriate for a child! This film always felt so hilariously naughty. And it all came full circle for me when the first line I got to deliver on screen was next to the gorgeous Siobhan Finneran in Alma’s Not Normal. For me this film is such an embodiment of city humour. It’s crude and naughty and straight up, with zero f**ks given. I love it. Dedicated to my mommy and our Clare Crickmore. Never stop being naughty and making each other laugh.’
